Hey y’all, I know it’s been a while since I’ve updated everyone here on the progress of my apprenticeship and well, that’s because there hasn’t really been any. If anything I feel like I have only back tracked since I last shared an update.
So… if you’ve been following my blog since the very beginning you’ll know that I signed up as an apprentice in 2016, which was just before I started this little blog of mine.
Since being an apprentice was something that I became really excited about as well as something which started playing a big roll in my life, I talked about it a lot on here… until it became a mess.
The first set back I had was when I found out in the beginning of 2018, that Tafe had decided to push back my training by three months, which you can read more about in this post. Around the same time, I also decided to quit the place I had started my apprenticeship with, due to ethical reasons.
This meant that I had to find another company to continue my apprenticeship with, and quickly, in order to resume my studies at Tafe with no issues. Thankfully… I made the deadline of re-signing up my apprenticeship by a month!
Initially I was pretty happy when I re-signed as an apprentice, in November 2018, as everything seemed to be back on track, once again. This was until about six months later, when I realised that I wasn’t actually going to be signed off as quickly as I thought.
My apprenticeship is competency based, yet I am not being treated based on competency but rather on the amount of hours I am working for my employer. I find this to be annoying, because it feels like it doesn’t matter how much effort I put into my job/advancing as a pastry chef when there is no reward.
Shortly after realising this too, I also discovered that even though I did graduate Tafe in December 2018, I will have to go back again this year. 😏 I’m hoping it will be a positive experience but right now everything about my apprenticeship is a little frustrating.
I know I could just take the easy way out and quit everything to do with this, but right now, I really just want to finish it through to the end. Maybe I won’t but for now my goal is, I will.
So even though I will be going back to Tafe next week, I still have no idea what I am required to do there. I have spoken to several people in person, over the phone and via email and no one has given me any real answer. It just seems as though someone has decided it would be a good idea to add some more courses to the Certificate 3 in Retail Cakes & Pastry, (which is what I had completed), but have not decided on what the courses will consist of.
So as of right now, I am heading into my fourth year of being an apprentice, who has already graduated Tafe, yet I will be going back to Tafe, still only being signed up as a second year apprentice. 💛
